In 2016, faculty in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Art collaborated on a sculpture of Gorgetosuchus pekinensis, a new species of aetosaur described by Dr. Andy Heckert from North Carolina's Triassic basins. The sculpture (originially of plasticine and clay) was then cast in bronze by the Inferno Art Foundry in Georgia, with funding from Appalachian's University Research Council and 50 individual and corporate donors. "Archie" is now back at Appalachian and is on its pedestal in the Fred Webb Jr. Rock Garden and Outdoor Laboratory.
